C.C. DeVille sentenced to jail

C.C. DeVille
C.C. DeVille gets 80 days for DUI charge

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille was sentenced to 80 days in jail after pleading no contest to driving while intoxicated.

DeVille, whose given name is Bruce Johannesson, was also sentenced to five years probation, fined $1,000 and ordered to surrender his license for a year, city prosecutors said Monday.

The 43-year-old rocker known for his over-the-top antics hit a parked vehicle August 24 while he was backing out of the driveway of his girlfriend's home, prosecutors said. He allegedly rammed another parked car, deploying his vehicle's air bags and injuring his girlfriend.

He pleaded no contest Friday to a charge of driving under the influence causing injury, authorities said.

Celtic Frost Mainman Resumes Work On Solo Album

Celtic Frost
Celtic Frost frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer has posted the following message on his official blog:

"I worked on music for my solo album for the first time in many months this week. I had neither been in the frame of mind to write such material nor was there any chance to find the time to do it during this truly unique and unreservedly challenging year so far. Celtic Frost usurped anything and everything. And it will continue to do so shortly; there is so much taking place here with regard to the new Celtic Frost album.

"But in this brief moment of appropriated and utterly conceived quiescence, I sat down and listened to what I had written so far for my own album during the past few years, and I couldn't stop myself from working on it some more. It will be so endlessly dark. And even though it is something very different, it is at the same time so very closely related to Celtic Frost.

"Martin [Ain, Celtic Frost bassist] will kill me for this, for I am supposed to finish and submit my liner notes and the vast credits for the Celtic Frost album. And I am also working on some graphic design ideas with him. I am probably already very overdue, actually. And I am also supposed to hand in this month's installment of my column, for which I haven't written a single word yet.

"But my own sanity had to take priority, briefly, this once. I will be joining Martin at the studio all this week, working for CELTIC FROST again, at any rate."

As previously reported, Celtic Frost have set "Dark Matter Manifest" as the tentative title of their first album in 13 years. The culmination of some three and a half years of songwriting and recording work, the album was largely produced by the band themselves and financed by their own production company, with additional assistance from HYPOCRISY/PAIN mastermind Peter Tägtgren during the final recording and mixing sessions at Horus Sound Studio in Hanover, Germany. Negotiations with a variety of labels are currently underway, and the album is scheduled for a release in early 2006. Original Celtic Frost members Tom Gabriel Fischer (voice and guitars) and Martin Eric Ain (bass) are joined by Erol Unala (guitar) and Franco Sesa (drums). The band are now managed by Antje Lange for The A Label in Berlin, Germany.

Whitesnake Frontman: 'The DVD Will Be Ready When It's Ready' -

Whitesnake
Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale has posted the following message on the group's official web site:

"I have found out this year that being angry and pissed off has gotten me absolutely nowhere, so I am trying to allow events that are out of my control to unfold in their own way, and it is a good realization. I recommend this approach to all if you're encountering negativity in your lives.

"The DVD will be ready when it's ready, and if anyone is interested, then they will acquire regardless of when it is released. The big thing for me is that is will represent Whitesnake in an appropriate way, and document a very special evening in the company of friends."

As previously reported, Whitesnake's long-awaited live DVD, "In the Still of the Night" (AFM Records/Soulfood/CHS), has had its release date pushed back to January 27, 2006.

The set, which was recorded with 13 cameras in October 2004 at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, was supposed to come out in time for the band's summer's U.S. tour, but was pushed back to later in the year because the producer suffered a heart attack. "The guy who's been coordinating everything has just had a heart attack," Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale told Launch. "I said, 'Was it that good?' I'm gonna put on the, the thing a disclaimer for, 'WHITESNAKE are not responsible for speeding tickets or damage to home furnishings.' You know, evidently now, we're gonna have to be, 'or cardiac arrest!'"

"In the Still of the Night" (view cover here) will feature the following track listing:

Kaiser Chiefs singer in onstage collapse

Ricky Wilson
Ricky Wilson keels over

Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson dramatically collapsed following the band's O2 NME Rock 'N' Roll Riot Tour show in Birmingham.

The band had just finished playing at the city's Academy on Sunday (October 23) when the energetic frontman rushed off stage and fainted.

A statement from a source close to the band told NME.COM: "He got knackered and flaked out. There was first aid at the side of the stage and they gave him some water and then he was bright as a button two minutes later."

Another witness posting on the Kaiser's official website kaiserchiefs.co.uk said: "He did literally just collapse and Nick (Hodgson - drummer) poured a bottle of water over his head and he still didn't get up."

The O2 NME Rock 'N' Roll Riot Tour hits London's Brixton Academy tonight for a three-night, sold-out stint and also sees performances from Maximo Park and The Cribs.

Kaiser Chiefs release their next single 'Modern Way' on November 7.

Super Furry Animals and Caribou Star in the Too Clever for Prime Time Tour

Super Furry Animals
Tee, hee! I have a joke for you, inspired by the ingenious pairing of Super Furry Animals and Caribou as tour mates and by my inimitable funny bone...

A welshman walks into an Irish pub in the middle of Winnipeg and says to the Canadian bartender, "Ysbeidiau heulog?" The bartender replies, "Take off, eh! I don't speak Cymraeg!"

Pretty funny, huh? I'm thinking about taking my act on the road. Just that one joke, though. Every night, I'll get up in front of an audience that has zipped past their two drink minimum to teeter dangerously close to the precipice of the eighteen drink maximum and tell that joke and that joke only. And it will kill every night.

I'll become an overnight sensation, a media darling, an "it" person, and maybe, if my website takes off, I'll become that most DiCrescenzo of things, a welebrity. I'll have a movie that will be the perfect amalgamation of Man on the Moon and The Aristocrats. It will win all the Independent Spirit Awards and one Razzie. David Cross will make fun of me and Weird Al Yankovic will lampoon my Baz Luhrman-like novelty hit that features my voice intoning that joke over and over again to the backdrop of an Enya-style beat.

I will ride the wave into a cult comedy series that will start out on Spike but will then transfer to NBC when the ratings go through the roof. The suits at GE know a cash cow when they see one. There will be ass loads of merchandising including a Big Mouth Billy Bass type thing that spouts off my joke every time someone walks by, a foam rubber stress ball, an office foosball table, keychains and emory boards. I will be asked to curate the 2006 U.S. edition of the All Tommorow's Parties festival and I will choose Super Furry Animals and Caribou to play over and over and over again. Sometime during the 3rd performance by Dan Snaith and company, the crowd will overpower the band with their chants, begging me to come on stage and tell my joke. I am humble as I walk on stage to oblige my adoring legions of fans who cheer violently as I approach the mic. An eerie calm fills the air. Just as I am about to open my mouth, an arrow hits me square in my Adam's apple, sending buckets of blood gushing from my throat and covering the stage in a deep scarlet puddle. My last word as I gasp my final breath? "Pwned."

OK Go Get A Boost From Franz Ferdinand's Producer

Ok Go
When last we heard from synth-pop's best kept secret, OK Go, they were planning a fast and furious recording strike, hoping to get in and out of the studio in a couple of months with a follow-up to 2002's self-titled debut firmly in hand. A year later they've arrived back on store shelves with Oh No, a disc devoid of keys, instead beating down any sophomore worries with some punchy guitar rock. Buh?
.

"The actual recording of the record took about two months," frontman Damian Kulash explains. "But writing the record, which we thought would be like, just come off the tour, guns a-blazing, ready to go — you know, after you've been on tour for two years you think that you're going to have all these bottled up ideas

Because every time you get over-caffeinated on an airplane somewhere you're like 'I've got the best idea for a song!' and so you think these things have all built up inside of you. And then you stop, you get off tour, and you're like 'OK! Open the floodgates! Here comes my masterpiece!' And instead it's this tiny trickle of, like, atrophied mess. It was really bad, for a few months it was really depressing trying to write. So it took about six months to get to the point where we actually liked what were writing."

"We ended up writing something like 60 to 100 songs, in about six months," bassist Tim Nordwind interjects.

"Most of which I never want to hear again," Kulash laughs. "Some of it was so bad; it was awful. I mean there's a song on our new record called 'It's A Disaster.' That was the turning point. And you can see exactly how we were feeling at that point, all the lyrics are like, 'Everything fucking sucks! It's a fucking disaster! I hate it! G'night!'"

Once the grueling writing sessions were behind them, OK Go's four members went to the city of Malmo, Sweden, to record with Tore Johansson, an understandably popular producer since sitting at the dials for Franz Ferdinand's influential debut LP. Following that success, Johansson's been hard to get, but the relatively unknown band had no problem fitting into his schedule.

"He really liked our demos, so I don't know. I don't know how many other people approached him," Kulash says. "His rules were pretty specific — he was only going to record in Malmo, because he has a four-year-old daughter and he didn't feel like not being around and he really only wants to work on things that are artistically interesting to him.

And I mean, every producer always kinda says that — everybody in the whole music industry always claims, 'Hey I only work on things I really like' and every publicist you ever meet is like, 'Luckily, I love every band that gets assigned to me,' you know?"

"But he seems to be pretty choosy," Nordwind agrees.

"He actually turned down Depeche Mode while we were there, he turned down a bunch of shit that I can't imagine other producers turning down," Kulash says.

OK Go are more than happy with Johansson's work and their new rock edge, and while Oh No may have tossed aside the synth-pop, it still overflows with catchy hooks and fun, smart-ass lyrics.

Fans in the Toronto area can catch the band when they make a lone Canadian detour to the Horseshoe Tavern on November 7.

New York Dolls Documentary Opens This Week

New York Dolls
Along with the Stooges, Rocket from the Tombs, the MC5, and many others, the New York Dolls have helped make the past few years a heyday for proto-punk reunions (not to mention Just For Men's shareholders). After a number of hi-octane live dates, the Dolls' 2004 Morrissey-instigated regrouping will soon be bolstered by a new-- albeit somber-- documentary, chronicling late bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane's return to the group.

Offering a blend of music history and human drama, the upcoming film New York Doll, explores Kane's difficult decision to rejoin the legendary punk instigators after a three-decade separation, during which time he made a decidedly un-punk conversion to Mormonism.

The film features interviews with Kane and his bandmates, as well as friends and fellow musicians as it traces the history of the Dolls and from their early 70s prime up through last year. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a happy ending: only weeks after rejoining singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain for the Dolls' reunion debut at London's Royal Festival Hall during the 2004 Meltdown Festival, the 55-year-old Kane passed away from leukemia.

New York Doll, directed by Greg Whitely, was a hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and will debut in theaters in New York and Los Angles on October 28.

Johansen, Sylvain and the rest of the current Dolls lineup (guitarist Steve Conte, bassist Sami Yaffa, drummer Brian Delaney and keyboardist Brian Koonin) are scheduled to enter the studio later this year to record a new album, tentatively set for a spring 2006 release on Roadrunner Records. They will play four shows this week, including performances at both the New Orleans and Memphis dates of the Voodoo Music Experience.

Looking for a kiss:

10-27 Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Culture Room
10-28 Orlando, FL - House Of Blues
10-29 New Orleans, LA - Voodoo Music Festival
10-30 Memphis, TN - Voodoo Music Festival

Death Cab Blasé Over Big Chart Debut; Say Next LP Will Be 'Complicated'

Death Cab for Cutie

It's essential that Plans follow-up is different, Ben Gibbard insists.

When Death Cab for Cutie learned that their latest album, Plans, had debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart last month (selling more than 89,000 copies in its first week), they celebrated big-time — just like any
long-in-the-tooth, hard-workin' rock and roll band would. Well, sort of.

"We kind of woke up in the morning and were checking our e-mails and someone was like, 'Hey, you guys are #4!' And we were like, 'Great!' - and took a slurp of coffee and ate some cereal," DCFC frontman Ben Gibbard laughed. "So it was pretty much just like every other day."

"I was in the middle of doing data-transferring and had been spending the entire day doing that," guitarist Chris Walla added. "And all of a sudden, our manager interrupted me to tell me that we had the #4 album, and I was like, 'Great, that's awesome. I have to get back to this.' So nothing really changed."

Okay, so strippers and champagne it ain't, but if the guys in Death Cab are anything, it's humble. And whether it's Gibbard's lyrics - honest yet wide-eyed ruminations on life and death - or Walla's earnest guitar playing (see "Death Cab For Cutie Living Up To The 'Death' Part On Next LP"), clearly a lot of people are listening: sales of the album have already soared past the 240,000 mark. And so, with the video for the album's first single, "Soul Meets Body," currently rotating on MTV, they're doing what any big-label rock act would do: trot out a second single.

"We're going to shoot a video for 'Crooked Teeth.' We're choosing a treatment and director right now, but it'll be difficult because the song is kind of a tough one to figure out," Gibbard said. "I'm fascinated with how people end up in the situations they're in, and the obstacles that they basically put in front of themselves to stay sedentary in that position. So that's what the song's about: skylines like crooked smiles, state lines being like the Berlin Wall. It's like there's no way to get over those boundaries, though there clearly is. It just takes a bit of dedication to change one's position in life."

And though Death Cab still have about a month left in their North American tour (see "Death Cab For Cutie Plan Fall Tour, Even Though That Goes Against Their Nature"), they're already thinking about getting back in the studio to record a follow-up to Plans (we told you they were hard-workin'). And while both Gibbard and Walla have a whole lot of ideas about just what that new record will sound like, there's one thing they both can agree on: It's going to be different.

"I'm incredibly proud of [Plans], but I feel we had to make it exactly when we did. It's a transitional record for our transitional time. I think we'll make the free-jazz record next time around," Gibbard laughed. "I think it will be essential for the growth of the band to do something different next time, whether that means bringing in an outside producer or making the album only six songs long. Who knows?"

"Ben's been talking off and on about concepts for the next record. Like, maybe they're a bunch of pop songs but all strung together, like some old Yes record or something," Walla added. "I don't know what's going to happen, but I think everyone's ready to do something complicated."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs album details emerge

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Karen O speaks out

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have confirmed first details of their second album.

As previously reported, the band have been recording for much of this year and guitarist Nick Zinner has been spotted in London, where he's been mixing the follow-up to 2003's 'Fever To Tell' with producer Alan Moulder.

The untitled record is due for release in March this year. Speaking to fans online, singer Karen O revealed the titles of two songs, and said some of the older tracks worked on in the sessions may still see the light of day, despite not featuring on the album.

She told a fan website: "Songs to be included on the new album include 'Cheated Hearts' and 'Honey Bear'. All the rest are new tracks. Some older tracks such as 'Down Boy' used in a special EP, but only MAYBE."

Recording was completed on August 24 - almost two-and-a-half years after the release of 'Fever To Tell' in April 2003.

Alice Cooper: Hero to Homeless?

Alice Cooper (1973)
Alice Cooper wants to help the hungry men of London, even if they don't want pizza.

According to the U.K. website Playlouder.com, Cooper is pitching a reality TV show in which he will save a homeless man from the streets of London. "It will be about a guy who is sleeping in downtown London and life is totally gone for him," Cooper reportedly said of his new show. "He's just a bundle of rags.

We find out how he got there and reconstruct his life. That would be great TV." Apparently Alice will search the gritty parts of London for the "right type" of homeless man.

Maybe he means the kind who wears ghoulish makeup, likes to play golf, and wants to open sports bars, just like Alice. After wrapping up a U.S. tour, Cooper heads to England for the month of November, ostensibly to tour, but perhaps to pound the pavement in search of the right derelict.

Eurythmics On Reunion: 'We Don't Know'

Eurythmics
Next month will return the spotlight to pop duo Eurythmics, with a best-of disc featuring its first new songs in six years and a reissue campaign featuring expanded editions of the group's entire catalog. But Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart insist nothing has been decided about potential future collaborations.

When asked if they consider Eurythmics an ongoing concern, even though they may go years without recording, they do not answer, instead noting that they had to have some time apart after the first decade of incessant touring and recording.

"But we never fought," Stewart tells Billboard. "We did too fight," Lennox counters. "Did we?" Stewart asks.

They agree that they had to get off the schedule they were on in order to "do regular things," Stewart says. "I wanted a family," Lennox adds, "and they don't come off the shelf."

When asked if they plan on working on a new album, they just laugh. "I'm always amazed when people ask us," Lennox says. "We don't know."

Regardless, response has been highly positive for new single "I've Got a Life," which boasts an uplifting melody juxtaposed with sad lyrics. "That's every Eurythmics song," Stewart says with a laugh. "There's a lot of optimism, there's a lot of angst and melancholy in the same song, which is unusual."

Although they have not ruled it out, it's unlikely the pair will tour behind the "Ultimate Collection" set, in part because Lennox dislikes many aspects of being on the road. "I get all anxious and I can't calm down. And to do the 54 dates I did with Sting [last year], it was mad," she says. "I don't really know why I did it. I thought I misread the amount of dates."

Liam Gallagher: 'I Don't Like Bloc Party Or Babyshambles'

Liam Gallagher
Liam Gallagher has dismissed Bloc Party saying that he doesn’t “give a fuck” about them.

The Oasis singer admits that he doesn’t like the band who have been billed as the next Oasis, Blur and Radiohead in the past.

Speaking to mtv, he said: "Fair play to them (Bloc Party), they're having a go, doing what they're doing and all that and people seem to be in to them." He continued:

"People ask me these questions like 'are they the new fucking Oasis, new fucking Blur or the new fucking thing?' I couldn't give a fuck, I don't like them."

"I don't wish anything bad to happen to them, its just not my kind of thing. Same goes for fucking Babyshambles."

Sadly, Liam says that he won’t resort to violence against the foursome, saying: "I don't want to fight them, I don't want their fucking birds, I don't want to shoot their dogs, I don't want to stand on their hamsters head. I'm just not into their music."

Black Mountain Tour with Dead Meadow, Wolf Parade; Worm

Dead Meadow
Treat me like a fool, Chan Marshall, treat me mean and cruel, but love me, for Christ's sake, and let's make children (oh yeah, Black Mountain tour w/ Dead Meadow and a little bit w/ Wolf Parade).

Thanks for the banana info, Mango. Based on your recommendation, I ate one for breakfast, and now I feel like--do you remember that monkey on Friends that had to go to the zoo because it wanted to hump everything?--like that. You know, energetic.

It's possible, though, to get too jacked up on bananas. As with tequila, too much banana can make you do strange things like worm on the kitchen floor. Some of you may like worming on the kitchen floor. Others of you, however, may prefer to avoid such potentially hazardous and embarassing situations. If you belong to the former, you may stop reading: this article is not for you.

For the month of November, Tiny Mix Tapes will be imposing a rolling "Worming on the Kitchen Floor" ban on the European continent and, what the hell, the British isles as well. This has been timed to coincide with the upcoming Black Mountain tour, since the last thing we need is people worming on the kitchen floor at Black Mountain shows. Such an occurrence, already terrifying to imagine, would be made even worse by the fact that Dead Meadow would see you do it. These guys spent the summer opening for Sleater-Kinney, alright? These guys have smoked pot through Carrie Brownstein's shitkickers. You want them to see you doing the worm on the kitchen floor? And were you to worm on the kitchen floor at one of the UK shows, you'd suffer the ridicule of Wolf Parade, who would blast you right out of your Chucks and back into dorkdom with their hype laser slash beast-mastering twelve step program.

Here's the good news:

11.11.05 - Utrecht, NED - Ekko
11.12.05 - Den, NED - Bosch

Franz Ferdinand Promise Radical Direction

Alex Kapranos
Franz Ferdinand have promised fans a far more radical sound for their third album after enjoying worldwide success with ‘You Could Have It So Much Better…”.

Being interviewed by the Observer at the weekend Alex Kapranos said of their next project: "It's not about getting to the white hot heart of pop. We just want to get to the next place after this one."

Kapranos also admitted that he has a somewhat explosive relationship with guitarist Nick McCarthy but it all helps when they’re writing new material.

He admitted: "We're both quite strong characters. We have a lot in common, but what we don't have in common is drastically different. It's explosive as well as symbiotic. It gives it an edge."

Nick McCarthy revealed in the interview that the band had recently met one of their idols David Bowie and were completely star struck: "I spoke to him and I asked him if he'd ever been to Harlem.”

"He said the first time was 'When I was Ziggy'. I thought, bloody hell, you really are that guy, aren't you?”

Yoko Ono Says Bono Is John Lennon's Son

John Lennon and Yoko Ono
U2 front man Bono has revealed that Yoko Ono once told him that he was John Lennon’s son.

Speaking to the Rolling Stone Bono said: “Yoko came up to me when I was in my twenties, and she put her hand on me and she said, 'You are John's son.' What an amazing compliment!”

He also told how Lennon’s solo album with the Plastic Ono band in which he deals with the death of his mother Julia helped him cope with the death of his own mother when he was 14.

He said: "For me it was like he Lennon was talking about the veil lifting off, the scales falling from the eyes. Seeing out the window with a new clarity that love brings you. I remember that feeling."
