New York Dolls Documentary Opens This Week

New York Dolls
Along with the Stooges, Rocket from the Tombs, the MC5, and many others, the New York Dolls have helped make the past few years a heyday for proto-punk reunions (not to mention Just For Men's shareholders). After a number of hi-octane live dates, the Dolls' 2004 Morrissey-instigated regrouping will soon be bolstered by a new-- albeit somber-- documentary, chronicling late bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane's return to the group.

Offering a blend of music history and human drama, the upcoming film New York Doll, explores Kane's difficult decision to rejoin the legendary punk instigators after a three-decade separation, during which time he made a decidedly un-punk conversion to Mormonism.

The film features interviews with Kane and his bandmates, as well as friends and fellow musicians as it traces the history of the Dolls and from their early 70s prime up through last year. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a happy ending: only weeks after rejoining singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain for the Dolls' reunion debut at London's Royal Festival Hall during the 2004 Meltdown Festival, the 55-year-old Kane passed away from leukemia.

New York Doll, directed by Greg Whitely, was a hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and will debut in theaters in New York and Los Angles on October 28.

Johansen, Sylvain and the rest of the current Dolls lineup (guitarist Steve Conte, bassist Sami Yaffa, drummer Brian Delaney and keyboardist Brian Koonin) are scheduled to enter the studio later this year to record a new album, tentatively set for a spring 2006 release on Roadrunner Records. They will play four shows this week, including performances at both the New Orleans and Memphis dates of the Voodoo Music Experience.

Looking for a kiss:

10-27 Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Culture Room
10-28 Orlando, FL - House Of Blues
10-29 New Orleans, LA - Voodoo Music Festival
