The members of the band consisted of Lauryn Hill (rapper/singer), Wyclef Jean (rapper/producer) and Pras Michel (rapper).
The Fugees became a band in the mid-1990's. Their sound was a fusion of hip hop, soul and reggae music, and became quite popular after their sophomore album, “The Score” (released in 1996). |
The album, “The Score” went multi-platinum and catapulted them into their success and is most likely the reason why their name is now a household name.
The album not only was the staple of their name, but was also responsible for winning the group two Grammy awards (Best Rap Album, and Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for their cover of the Roberta Flack single, “Killing Me Softly”).
Unfortunately, their sophomore album would be their last album together. After experiencing personality conflicts between Hill and Jean, the group disbanded and went their separate ways to embark on solo careers.
Hill became successful and made a name of herself as a solo artist with her album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. Jean began to produce songs for artists (like Destiny's child and Carlos Santana), and Michel went on to producing soundtrack recordings and acting.
However, the group may be back in action together.
“You've got three individuals that have grown musically. But we're always on the same page – that's the magic of the Fugees,” Wyclef Jean told Yahoo! Music.
The group is set to release a new single together called, “Take it Easy”.
In regards to their hiatus from each other, Jean told Rolling Stone, “Like any group, we went through our fights, our trials, our tribulations and stuff, but I think with this group it's a little different. Because, usually groups break up and then you just go, 'Yo okay, let's just watch, like, the death of this one, the death of that one.'”
Our Thoughts
We are very excited to see what they have in store, because they are such pioneers in the music industry. They will, no doubt, bring a lot of new style and flavour to the scene.
