Singer Pete Dohertyhas been arrested after a police drugs operation in the town where his band had been playing. Babyshambles had played at Shrewsbury's Music Hall on Saturday night before it was raided by drug squad officers with sniffer dogs. Police said a man and a woman were later arrested for possession of class A drugs and 17 others searched during an operation in the town overnight. |
Doherty was expected to be questioned at Telford police station on Sunday.
The woman was questioned but has since been released without charge.
Coaches checked
A spokesman for Doherty, who has received media attention as the boyfriend of troubled supermodel Kate Moss, confirmed the singer had been held.
"I can confirm that he was detained and held overnight, although I have no details of the exact circumstances," he said.
Two coaches were also searched in the town and suspected drugs seized.
A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "In the early hours of this morning officers stopped a mini bus in Shrewsbury town centre and detained a number of people for the purposes of a drugs search.
"Officers also attended one premises in Shrewsbury and detained a number of other individuals."
He said they had acted on intelligence that people were suspected of using class A drugs in the town.
A gig in Norwich planned by Babyshambles for Sunday night has been cancelled.
