Sonic Youth Guitarist's Avant-DVD

Lee Ranaldo
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo's experimental collaboration with filmmaker Leah Singer will see DVD release on Plexifilm this November 29. The DVD, Drift, is footage from their live performances of poetry, diary excerpts, and music from Ranaldo, with film loops and live image manipulation by Singer.

The pair has collaborated since 1991, performing "Drift" in galleries and museums the world over. Ranaldo and Singer will also present an installation and live performance of "Drift" at Gigantic Artspace in New York on November 16. The DVD features 5.1 surround sound and comes with a 115-page book of essays, photographs, and poetry.

Drift joins the huge body of non-SY-related work Sonic Youth members have produced. Thurston Moore is a columnist and music writer for Arthur Magazine, and Kim Gordon acted in the film Last Days and designed clothing for the X-Girl label. This is all great, of course, but maybe if they spent a little more time on Sonic Youth, that band could finally make it big.
