Frank Zappa DVD Causes Zappa Freaks to Hemorrhage at the Anus

Frank Zappa
If you know anyone who is into Frank Zappa, then you know the meaning of obsession. Some people think Guided By Voices completists are fanatical, but let's not kid ourselves -- they don't hold a candle to the Zappa freaks.

How many times has Zappa music been repackaged into all new collections that cause fans to foam at the mouth and message boards to weigh down with discussions about the essentialness of the new compendium? The dude has more posthumous releases than Tupac Shakur. No matter the person's feelings on how vital the collection is, chances are they've already bought it and had, in fact, pre-ordered it months in advance.

So it should come as no surprise that a new Zappa release has the Zappa Freak Community doing somersaults. I think, anyway. I'm too lazy to find out for sure, but I'm willing to bet that somewhere there are a bunch of Zappa geeks sighing "Finally!" in chorus. The cause for the champagne popping and nut busting?

The release today (October 18th) of The Dub Room Special on DVD. Originally available on VHS and Beta in 1982, The Dub Room Special was first released by Zappa to satiate the many fans who were disappointed that he was not going on tour that year and would therefore have to miss his annual Halloween show in New York City, a tradition since 1974. The Special includes footage from the previous year's Halloween show intercut with a concert filmed at KCET, a Los Angeles public television station, in 1974 for a show called "A Token of His Extreme." Also featured is cutting edge stop-motion animation by Bruce Bickford, who had previously worked with Zappa on Baby Snakes. The original version of the 90-minute documentary was only available via mail-order and has been a very rare find over the decades. Bootleg versions of The Dub Room Special on DVD had found their way onto eBay in recent years, though the quality was probably less than shitty. Especially if it was a Beta transfer! Hey-oh! Take that Betamax!
