Constantines Tour With Hold Steady, Cover Neil Young

Constantines
Everyone's favorite synergizers of Springsteenian ruggedness and Fugazian angularity, the Constantines, have a brand new album out. It's called Tournament of Hearts and it's named after a curling competition. Oh you silly Canadians!

The third proper Constantines album, Tournament arrived on American store shelves yesterday courtesy of Sub Pop, but was available in Canada a couple weeks ago thanks to their longtime label, Three Gut. Unfortunately, its arrival was bittersweet, as Three Gut announced back in June that the record would be the label's last official release.

The Cons (as they are affectionately called by friends and family) will carry on, of course. Tonight they will begin a two-month, continent-hopping tour. For the last half of October, they'll be playing opposite the Hold Steady's stein-tapping sounds, and for the first five dates in Europe in November, they'll rock out with Sub Pop labelmates Sleater-Kinney. Good as they are at picking touring partners, the Constantines are best at executing their trad-ish eclecticism.

This Saturday, October 15, at three p.m., the Constantines will perform live in the studio at KEXP, the Seattle-based indie-yuppie powerhouse. And speaking of mom-rock, the Toronto record label Blue Fog will release a limited split 12" between the Constantines and the Unintended (which includes members of Eric's Trip, the Sadies, and Blue Rodeo) sometime this fall. According to the Constantines' website, "we're playing some of our favourite Neil Young songs, they're doing their favourite Gordon Lightfoot songs." Wow, that sure is patriotism right there.
